1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft by the Indiana Fever, scored a game-high 21 points in the team’s preseason game Friday against the Dallas Wings. I think it’s a good kickoff to the WNBA season. I think the way we play, you know there’s some things we could’ve executed a little better. Ogunbowale finished with 19 points, including nine points in the fourth quarter, to lift the Wings to the preseason victory. Michael Conroy/APBoston – who averaged 14.5 points and 8.4 rebounds last season – said she hopes to improve on a promising debut WNBA campaign.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — In Adam Silver’s eyes, the NBA’s new 65-game policy is working. “I can tell you that the number of games that players have participated in is up this season,” Silver said. “I just don’t like it, how it forces players to play if they’re injured to achieve something,” Denver center Nikola Jokic said. And as such, the gap in the system that the NBA felt Team Ignite would fill isn’t really a gap anymore. “We are in the process of reassessing Team Ignite,” Silver said.

A month in, the launch of the Professional Women's Hockey League has been by all accounts a resounding win, from multiple attendance records being broken to the quality of play. Women's players have been involved in NHL All-Star Weekend several times now, including longtime U.S. captain Kendall Coyne Schofield stealing the show in the fastest skater event in the 2019 skills competition. Minnesota on Jan. 6 set the record for the biggest crowd to attend a professional women's hockey game with 13,316 at the Wild's home arena in St. Paul. “We’ll continue to lean in and work with the women’s players and have them as part of our world,” Mayer said. “It just makes it a better event.”The only thing that would be better, Coyne Schofield said, is having every PWHL player taking part.

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia's state Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to approve rules for a new commission to discipline and remove state prosecutors, meaning the commission can't begin operating. In an unsigned order, justices said they have “grave doubts” about their ability to regulate the duties of district attorneys beyond the practice of law. Beyond the hurdle of state Supreme Court approval of rules, four district attorneys are suing to overturn the commission, arguing that it unconstitutionally infringes on their power. The Georgia law states a prosecutor can't refuse to prosecute whole categories of crimes, but must instead decide charges case by case. It applies both to district attorneys and elected solicitors general, who prosecute lower-level crimes in some Georgia counties.

There are a slew of users and uses that compete for curb space. The solution, some advocates say, is removing free parking and charging for spots based on demand. Free parkingThe root of the chaos at the curb stems from free on-street parking, critics say. Cities “squander curbs for free parking for cars because drivers are the people who show up at public meetings,” Shoup said. Smart loading zonesEven if cities managed their on-street parking problems for private vehicles more effectively, bikers, delivery workers, outdoor dining and other uses would still crowd the curb.

Sept 14 (Reuters) - Hurricane Lee barreled across the North Atlantic toward New England and Eastern Canada on Friday, threatening to bring drenching rains, powerful winds and a life-threatening storm surge to the region over the weekend. Lee is expected to weaken into a strong tropical storm before making landfall in southwestern Nova Scotia as a strong tropical storm late on Saturday, the Canadian Hurricane Center said. In Canada, more than 1 million people in Nova Scotia and eastern New Brunswick were also under a tropical storm warning as the massive storm crawls northward over the open waters of the Atlantic. Some spots, such as Cape Cod in Massachusetts and eastern Halifax County in Nova Scotia may see storm surge of up to 3 feet (91 cm), forecasters said. Lee is the latest storm in what is proving to be a busy hurricane season that has featured a higher-than-average number of named storms.

US consumers are done splurging, Fed report suggests

Washington, DC CNN —After a summer of robust consumer spending, America’s bars, hotels and restaurants say the era of post-pandemic splurging by US consumers has likely drawn to a close. “Consumer spending on tourism was stronger than expected, surging during what most contacts considered the last stage of pent-up demand for leisure travel from the pandemic era,” the report said. Consumer spending rose 0.8% in July, the strongest monthly spending gain since January. But that strength in leisure spending began to level off toward the end of August, the latest Beige Book shows. Still, leisure spending varied by region, with some reporting a noticeable slowing and others saying it is holding steady.

Washington, DC CNN —Last week’s economic data increasingly gave investors hope that the Federal Reserve could hold interest rates steady this month, following a hike in July that brought rates to their highest level in 22 years. It’s hard to say definitively if or when the central bank will hike interest rates again this year. The Fed could hold rates steady for the rest of the year if both the job market and the broader economy continue to slow, helping bring down inflation. Higher for longer means keeping interest rates elevated for a prolonged period. China’s National Bureau of Statistics releases August inflation data.

Aliyah Boston said she usually keeps it cool when she faces the star basketball players she grew up watching on television. Boston, a rookie power forward and center for the Indiana Fever, was in a close contest against the Las Vegas Aces and she was shoulder to shoulder with her childhood idol, Candace Parker. “It was unreal,” Boston said. This is serious business.’”Fifteen years ago, when Boston was just 6 years old, Parker won the W.N.B.A.’s Rookie of the Year Award. Now Boston is on track to do the same.

Should public buses be free?
  + stars: | 2023-07-08 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
New York CNN —More major cities in the United States are letting public transit riders hop on board for free. Boston is piloting three zero-fare public bus routes, and New York City is expected to test free buses on five lines. Fares made up, on average, 12.5% of transit agencies’ operating expenses in 2021, down from 31.4% in 2019, according to the American Public Transit Association. “By offering free public transport, we are not really attracting car drivers in large volumes,” said Mohamed Mezghani, secretary general of the International Association of Public Transport. “There’s no such thing as free transit,” he added.

By the second period it was clear that this was no ordinary playoff game when Bruins winger David Pastrnak tied the scores, steering a pass between his legs and into the goal in one spectacular motion. Peter Joneleit/Icon Sportswire/Getty Images“It’s a big win,” Panthers’ Sergei Bobrovsky said. The next game is the biggest game, so we have to be ready, be humble, but enjoy tonight. And I’d say it’s a great feeling for sure.”It had seemed unlikely that this playoff series would require a deciding game. It was that kind of game where there was just teams making great plays offensively.”Game 7 will be played in Boston Sunday.
‘Batman’ Is There When the Celtics Need Him

By the seventh game of the Eastern Conference semifinal series last May, nobody could say Grant Williams hadn’t done his share. Despite severe disadvantages in height, weight and renown, the Boston Celtics’ third-year forward had spent much of the series matching up against the Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo. For two weeks, he set his chest against the two-time MVP’s post-ups and planted his feet in the path of his drives. Then the team asked still more of Williams. “We all told him, ‘You have to shoot these shots,’” Boston assistant coach Ben Sullivan said.
Almost all of the hit the U.S. labor market took in 2020, when COVID-19 struck, was tied to temporary layoffs which were swiftly rescinded, said the paper presented on Saturday. Adjusted for these temporary shifts, “the labor market remained surprisingly tight throughout the crisis, despite the dramatic job losses” and by the spring of this year had recovered and returned to extremely tight conditions. The U.S. unemployment rate rode a virtual rollercoaster in 2020. As part of that effort Fed officials recognize their actions could push the economy into recession and will very likely drive up the unemployment rate. Collins was optimistic there is a pathway to price stability that entails only a modest unemployment rate increase.
